Welcome to SWANS®SONG
Welcome to Christine Whelan’s SWANS®SONG blog. I’m an author, professor and journalist — and you’ve landed in the one-stop shopping mall of all things Christine. This blog is updated daily (Click the links at the left for recent posts: Click the current month for all posts, or for a targeted search, pick a specific category.)
The blog is called SWANS®SONG in homage to the acronym that my family and I came up with — and that I subsequently trademarked — for my first book, Why Smart Men Marry Smart Women.
SWANS—Strong Women Achievers, No Spouse—are smart, successful women who have high hopes for their future. Some SWANS have graduate degrees or earn high salaries, while others are working in creative fields or public service. These smart women know that success isn’t about the money or the title: It’s all in your attitude.
And my new book, Marry Smart: The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to True Love, is a self-help book full of advice specifically geared toward SWANS. (Wonder if you’re among the SWANS? Click here to take a short quiz.)
Check back weekly: Each Wednesday I’ll post another relationship tip culled from my academic research, the latest books and interviews with men and women just like you.
I’m working on several other forthcoming book projects — including a book on the history and core values of self-help — and I teach in the Sociology Department the University of Iowa — and this blog will have all the updates.
Thanks for visiting–and come back again soon!

Dear Dr. Whelan,
I know you are a scholar of self-help literature. I highly recommend the book Lost in The Cosmos by Walker Percy.
The subtitle of the book is “the Last Self-Help.” It is both a parody of other self-help books and an intellectual discussion of what it means to have a “self”. I have found this book to be very influential in my own personal journey of self discovery. It was written in the eighties, so some of the cultural references are a bit old. Beyond that minor aging flaw, Lost in the Cosmos is an excellent self-help book.
